49ers star CB Charvarius Ward undergoes surgery

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward has taken to his Instagram story to post that he has undergone surgery.

Ward did not specify the type of surgery he had, but Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk notes that a sign for Vincera Institute, a facility that specializes in core muscle procedures, can be seen in the background.

Ward dealt with a groin injury throughout the second half of the season, so perhaps that is what he was getting repaired.

The 27-year-old played all 17 games this past year, racking up 72 tackles, five interceptions, a forced fumble, 23 passes defended and a defensive touchdown en route to his first Pro Bowl nod. He also earned a Second-Team All-Pro selection.

Ward, who played his collegiate football at Middle Tennessee State, went undrafted but eventually landed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018.

He appeared in 13 contests during his rookie campaign, logging 30 tackles and three passes defended. Then, the following year, Ward’s role grew significantly, as he became a full-time starter and registered 74 tackles, a couple of picks, a forced fumble and 10 passes defended.

Ward spent the first four years of his career with the Chiefs, winning a Super Bowl with the club during the 2019-20 season.

Following his time in Kansas City, Ward signed with the 49ers, where he has truly broken out.

Before enjoying the best season of his career in 2023, Ward recorded 87 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and 11 passes defended during his debut campaign with San Francisco in 2022.

The McComb, Ms. native faced his former Chiefs mates in the Super Bowl earlier this month, but lost 25-22.

Charvarius Ward has become a critical piece of the Niners’ defense, so hopefully, he is able to make a full recovery heading into next season.
