Myles Garrett defends Bengals' Logan Wilson after Mark Andrews injury
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The debate around the hip-drop tackle raged on following the "Thursday Night Football" matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ravens tight end Mark Andrews injured his ankle after being on the end of a hip-drop tackle from Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson.

Wilson opted to bring down Andrews via the hip-drop maneuver in order to prevent the veteran tight end from reaching the end zone on Baltimore’s first drive of the contest.

There has been much talk since the play over whether the NFL should look to ban the hip-drop tackle. Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is among those who would not support such a call.

"I mean, can’t just continue to take tackling out the game," Garrett said ahead of the Browns’ home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. "… But when the quarterback is definitely not landing on him and with the hip drop, just to get there is tough enough, and now you have to get there thinking about I got to get the ball out. When I get the ball, I got to turn. I got to make sure I stay up. When I get to him, I got to wrap him up. But if he’s going this way, and I’m going this way, I got to make sure I don’t drop my hip. I got to turn.

"I’m trying to slow down his momentum, so he doesn’t get into the end zone. So, my hip is going to drop."

Wilson has since garnered much outside criticism for the tackle, but from Garrett’s standpoint, he does not believe that the fourth-year linebacker aimed to injure Andrews.

"I don’t think he had any intentions to harm him," Garrett said. "One force going that way, his force going that way. He’s going to the ground to stop his momentum. It’s part of the game, and it’s unfortunate, but that part of the game is probably never going to change."

Andrews reportedly suffered a cracked fibula and an ankle ligament injury on the play. He has recorded 45 receptions for 544 receiving yards this season.
