Pittsburgh Steelers Legend Gets Honest About Russell Wilson
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

As the Pittsburgh Steelers gear up for the upcoming 2024 NFL season, Mike Tomlin’s team is looking much different than the one that finished up the 2023 season. Gone is former starting quarterback Kenny Pickett, as well as season-ending starting quarterback Mason Rudolph. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were both acquired this offseason to give the team a fresh look at the quarterback position.

Wilson, a former superstar himself, is hoping to revitalize his career with the Steelers. After being released in strange fashion by the Denver Broncos, he quickly decided that Pittsburgh was the place for him to be.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Steelers’ legend Jerome Bettis took some time to talk about Wilson. He opened up in a recent on Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan.

“He can still play 100 percent. And he will be effective in this offense. He’s going to be good for this offense.”

What Kind Of Impact Can Russell Wilson Have On The Pittsburgh Steelers?

Let’s dive in and take a look at how the Steelers are set up and what kind of impact Wilson may be able to have.

During the 2023 season with the Broncos, Wilson put together a very good all-around campaign. He completed 66.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Wilson also picked up 341 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

With the Steelers, he will have some great weapons to work with. Most notably, George Pickens is likely excited about the move to a better passing quarterback. He is one of the most talented young wide receivers in the NFL, but he has not had a quarterback that has been able to get him the ball consistently.

Outside of Pickens, the Steelers have other talented weapons including rookie receiver Roman Wilson, Van Jefferson, Pat Freiermuth, and Quez Watkins. It isn’t a receiving corps full of stars, but they’re all fast and capable of making plays.

In the backfield with Wilson be the strong duo of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Both players put together monster seasons in 2023 and the Steelers will be expecting more of the same in 2024.

The presence of head coach Mike Tomlin gives reason to believe that the Steelers are going to be a contender in the AFC. Each and every year, he continues to get the most out of his team. With a better quarterback than he had in 2023 and a talented all-around roster, Pittsburgh certainly looks the part of a playoff team.

Expect to see Russell Wilson come out lookin to make a statement for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is rejuvenated in his new situation and performed well in 2023. Can he lead them to the playoffs? We’ll just have to wait and see. But, there are real reasons for optimism.
